Report: Mobile gaming to grow 27% annually

Cell phones are growing up. They have more power, better graphics, and a larger install base than ever before and with the rise of 3G networks, they support broadband as well. All this makes for an even more enticing platform for game publishers with ambitions beyond just Solitaire.

A new report by iSuppli suggests mobile gaming will grow at a rate of 27% per year on the back of better hardware. But the m arket has its obstacles including a lack of consumer awareness that "better" games can exist on cell phones, point of sale difficulties, and finicky downloads. Still, China and India are expected to lead industry growth to $1.6 billion by 2010.

But we can't help but feel publishers would like to think mobile games can grow significantly and maybe even some day serve up engaging experiences for hardcore gamers. But the realization that a non-game specific device can do so on a consistent basis like consoles and handhelds has yet to be seen, excluding the all powerful desktop/laptop of course.
