Instead of observing subjects' obedience patterns, the experiment was designed to determine whether or not torturing a virtual being would cause emotional distress. The study seemed to provide evidence of bond-forming between some participants and the virtual character, as 6 of 23 subjects allowed to see and hear the victim refused to carry out the shock treatment to its end.<br /><br />Scientists hope to use these findings to support the use of virtual beings (in place of real people) in psychological research, allowing researches to conduct otherwise unethical studies. But, as Collision Detection notes, this recent experiment also adds to the ongoing discourse about the affects of video game violence on the human psyche. If on some level of consciousness we do not distinguish between humans and our virtual counterparts, can violence enacted upon these virtual beings in video game worlds desensitize our reactions to real-life suffering? A pair of impressive accolades would certainly look good on the retail box, but how can a game with an unconfirmed release date be considered for a real time visuals award next month?<br /><br />We suppose nominating <em>Assassin's Creed</em> for pre-rendered kudos (based on the trailer?) is admissible (as long as the game doesn't win), but don't go heralding Ubisoft's title as a real time effects masterpiece when a playable demo isn't even publicly available. Why not consider <em>Assassin's Creed</em> for a VES award next year; and give credit to current games instead? You might recall that Apple also recently <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/12/ipod-gets-5-game-downloads-via-itunes/">embraced gaming</a> on their <em>somewhat popular</em> iPod range.<br /><br />No specific games have been mentioned yet, though <a href="http://psp.joystiq.com/2007/01/07/ces-uno-is-live-anywhere/">recent</a> CES <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/08/top-xbla-title-geometry-wars-headed-to-pc/">developments</a> might give you a fairly strong clue. Expect arcade games like <em>Geometry Wars</em> and <em>Uno</em> to make the jump, complete with wireless play and Live Anywhere integration. Popular franchises (hello <em>Halo</em>) may give Microsoft more traction in their struggle against the iPod, at least where portable games are concerned. As New York analyst Michael Gartenburg puts it, "It's not like the music enthusiasts have been flocking to Zune, and they need to really answer Apple in terms of feature pa rity."<br /><br />With the battle between audio players now spilling into the gaming arena, winners and losers become more and more difficult to spot in the cloud of dust. They can come from any city in the world, and they can be any height, but they must be interesting to look at, well-made and lightweight.<br /><br />Of course, by "lightweight" we mean that the file size should be reasonably small.<br /><br />If you’re confused, you may not have heard about the recent updates of Google Earth, Google SketchUp, and the 3D Warehouse. With these launches, all the pieces are now in place for contributors to the 3D Warehouse to see their creations show up in Google Earth for all the world to see.<br /><br />Here’s how it works:<br />1. Download <a href="http://sketchup.google.com">Google SketchUp</a>. Create a 3D model of something in your neighborhood, city or state -- your house, your business, your favorite restaurant, or the statue of Buckminster Fuller in the center of tow n. Be sure to geo-locate your model in Google Earth.<br /><br />2. Upload your model to the <a href="http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/">3D Warehouse</a>. Don’t forget to put your name on it (if it shows up in Google Earth, you’ll want the credit).<br /><br />3. Download the most recent version of <a href="http://earth.google.com">Google Earth</a> (a necessary step, as older versions don’t support super models). Launch Google Earth, go to the 3D Buildings folder under the Layers tab in the lefthand sidebar, and activate the “Best of 3D Warehouse.” Then fly to the location of the model you submitted. It might be there!<br /><br />If you don’t find it, keep checking -- sometimes it takes several weeks for models to appear in Google Earth. In the meantime, visit “Best of 3D Warehouse” to see some that have made the cut. Note the reported reductions include Xbox 360 SKUs of the bellwether <em>Madden</em> game, as well as <em>Tiger Woods</em> &amp; <em>FIFA</em>, the latter two being released this past quarter (all three cut from $60 to $50). Billed as a music-puzzle game, <em>Traxion</em> was going to integrate Kuju's music analysis technology with a player's MP3 collection (stored on the PSP Memory Stick), generating a series of minigames that would correspond to certain elements of each song -- the game would also include its own licensed tracks. Unfortunately this ambitious project has proved to be the undoin g of Kuju and publisher LucasArts's partnership.<br /><br />While both parties have declined to comment on the specific circumstances that led to the breakup, the official statement (from both sides) is that the split is a mutual decision. Though many insist that it's far superior to the original <em>Pac-Man</em>, is it really different enough to warrant its own Wednesday release slot? In fact, wasn't it a free launch title for the <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/livearcadexbox/default.htm">original Xb ox Live Arcade</a>? Perhaps if we received the miss <em>before </em>(or instead of) the man, it wouldn't come across as just another hurdle to be leapt over in the race to fresher content.<br /><br />Not to incite the pellet-munching hordes, but it seems that both Xbox Live Arcade and Nintendo's Virtual Console regularly get the terms "old" and "classic" confused. We don't want <em>all</em> of the old games again, we want the <em>best</em> ones. True enough, not everyone agrees on what makes a quality arcade title, but taking greater care in choosing them in the first place would greatly enhance the lineups of both services. A true classic is something you'll pick up and play right this second, with nary a thought about graphics, sound or age -- and there aren't as many of those as you might think.<br /><br />In those respects, perhaps <em>Ms. Pac-Man</em> is a classic. However, its familiar trappings don't demand an immediate 400 point ($5) purchase, especially not with <em >Pac-Man</em> already sitting on the same service and <em>Worms</em> being pushed away another 7 days. Games like this and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/27/old-new-rally-x-on-xbox-live-arcade/"><em>New</em> </a><em><a href="javascript:void(0);/*1168293516921*/">Rally-X</a> </em>only dilute the XBLA experience and a quick succession of them could steadily lead to more and more apathy.<br /><br />Hell, it's not even that hard to defeat apathy. Note: mobile gaming accounted for 14% of EA's total revenue last fiscal year (including PSP, DS, GBA?), and programming for iPods is a breeze compared to mobile phones which each use unique OSs thus increasing development costs.<br /><br />But having downloaded EA's well produced version of <em>Sudoku</em> with its slick presentation for my iPod video, I gotta say the controls keep me from playing. The scroll wheel is just to clunky for fast navigation, significantly slowing down the experience. Still, Reuters reports on EA's optimism despite the limiting controls: "The iPod may not be the best device for playing games, but it already is carried around by millions of people, giving it a certain edge, said Forrester analyst Paul Jackson. So PS3s and Xbox 360s used as movie players account for 80% of total HD players in the market.
